Hannah
Elizabeth Joy was born on May 23, 1954 in Bell Island, Newfoundland.
The oldest of 12, she learned to work hard and take care of others at
a young age. Betty moved to Toronto and then to Georgetown to work
while in her late teens. It was in Georgetown where she met the love
of her life Stephen. They married on January 5th, 1974. Over the next
three and a half years they would welcome Jason, Stephen Jr. (Telly)
and Trudy into their family. Betty worked as a correctional officer
until she found her true calling as a foster parent. Over the next 29
years she would provide love, guidance and a safe home to over 100
foster children. Betty loved family above all else and always made
sure people knew how she felt about them. She took great pride in
being a grandmother and loved her grandchildren dearly. Having her
family gathered at her home in Burnt Point brought her so much
happiness. Betty was a firm believer in the power of prayer and held
her faith close until the end. Betty made the world better. She always
offered an open door, open fridge and open heart often with a warm
slice of homemade bread. She loved to surprise people with random acts
of kindness and always thought of others first. Her wish was for
others to do the same. Betty passed away peacefully on January 31st,
2023 at Kings County Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. Special
thanks to Dr. Bradley, Mallory from palliative care, her nurse James
and all health care providers who made her final days more
comfortable.
Survived by her husband
Stephen, children Jason (Jennifer), Telly (Robin) and Trudy (Kevin),
grandchildren Alexander, Reiley, Kale, Shaye, Kameron and Mason. Also
survived by her siblings and extensive extended family.
